We have 3 amazing TYO interns, Antwan, Francisco, and Yousif that are all recent graduates of the Outdoor Outreach Adventure Club Program and are now serving as TYO interns while studying at College and University. Antwan and Yousif are both Iraqi refugees that were re-settled in San Diego with the opportunity to start a new life and Francisco is a first generation immigrant from Mexico.
Through their participation in Outdoor Outreach they were able to develop a network of friends and mentors, find their passion for the outdoors, and get the support they needed to graduate from high school and move on to college. While still in High School, they brought their love for the outdoors and technology together and received a grant from Outdoor Nation to develop a mobile app to help their peers access the outdoors.
“My culture (Iraq) isn’t big on nature, and I would be playing video games right now if it wasn’t for Outdoor Outreach,” said Antwan. “We’re really passionate about getting others into nature and want to do whatever we can to help.”
Despite all three being busy with their college studies, they still find the time to help TYO with many of our technology related projects. Their computer skills and passion for TYO are invaluable to our team.
Antwan is currently a junior at the University of California, San Diego studying Mathematics and Computer Science. Yousif, is a fulltime college student at Grossmont and Cuyamaca College, and is intending to major in Electrical Engineering. Francisco is currently attending San Diego State University majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
